Executive to Blockworks: Shrina Kurani, a candidate for the 41st Congressional District in California, believes that crypto-literate politicians are essential to ensure Web3 advancement.

Shrina Kurani is utilizing non-traditional tactics to increase awareness for her candidacy and to draw attention to climate-friendly Web3 options.

Launching 230 NFTs, Kurani, a California Socialist seeking a seat in the 41st Congressional District, partnered with NFT (non-fungible token) platform Abris. The number represents the 230 billion tons of carbon left in the world's "carbon budget," according to Kurani.

The NFTs are priced at $1,250 and $5,800, respectively, and will be available until March. They will provide holders with accessibility to airdrops from other crypto and environmental initiatives, chats with climatologists, and the campaign's Earth Day celebration in the virtual world, among other things.

As Kurani explained to Blockworks, the NFTs serve as the candidate's "merchandise," and the revenue generated by them will be utilized for networking as well as "creating a group that has conducted such races previously and succeeded."

Abris CEO Priya Samant stated in a release that when "new ideas meet cutting-edge technology, funding becomes an amazing adventure."

"It is encouraging to see political parties being innovative and stepping into the area of non-fungible tokens."

Abris is based on Algorand, which has collaborated with ClimateTrade to balance pollution and become a carbon-negative blockchain platform.

To ensure Web3 development, Kurani believes that lawmakers who are knowledgeable about technology and cryptography are crucial. She is taking on Republican US Representative Ken Calvert, who has occupied the district position since 2013. Other contenders include Democrat Will Rollins and Republican State Senator Melissa Melendez, both of whom are running for election.

Kurani works as a vice-chairman of business development at Republic, a financial technology firm based in New York that operates a retail investing platform, a blockchain consulting firm, and a private capital division, among other things. Over $700 million in investments have been made by the business, which has backed about 600 enterprises.

Kurani, a former mechanical engineer at NASA, co-founded FoodNest, a Berlin-based start-up that provides access to food supplies, in 2015. She served as the company's chief executive officer until January 2018. Later in her career, she had executive positions at Sutro, a business that specializes in developing water-related solutions, as well as the venture financing firm Better Ventures.

According to Kurani, the United States now has an opportunity to engage in developing technologies and digital services that are focused on openness, efficiency, and accessibility.

The democratization of access to financial services in general and the deeply linked relationship among technology and ownership to drive efficiencies, educate the American population, and inspire financial literacy in particular for historically disenfranchised societies are some of the goals she outlined in a recent interview with Blockworks.

As for crypto regulations that Kurani would embrace if she were appointed, she referred to tax and accounting reporting systems as "low-hanging fruit" that would assist the sector. As part of her commitment to transparency, Kurani said she would emphasize clear requirements on knowing your customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) reporting while also striving to preserve privacy.

President Biden issued an executive order last week that directs government departments to investigate various approaches to digital assets and to report back to the administration. There are sections dedicated to consumer safety, financial soundness, risk reduction, the United States' financial leadership, financial inclusion, and ethical development in the cryptocurrency space.

In her interview with Blockworks, Kurani stated that "the first part of legislation begins with education and engagement, and the executive order is establishing a road to achieve precisely that."

In addition to Andrew Yang's formation of Lobby3, a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that plans to finance advocacy organizations to form connections with legislators and enlighten them on Web3, the NFT drop is intended to engage the crypto population in partaking in the future of crypto legislative measures.

In a discussion with Blockworks published last month, the former presidential candidate stated that ensuring that there is sound legislation is critical for the business.
