⚖ Nelson Mandela’s 1962 Arrest Warrant NFT rakes in $130,000 for donation.

1.9 million rands ($130,000) were collected in an auction for a non-fungible token made from Nelson Mandela's original arrest warrant, which will be used to help support a historic site that recounts South Africa's battle for democracy.

A conspiracy to overthrow the white-minority government led to Mandela's arrest in 1962, which resulted in his 27-year imprisonment and eventual election as South Africa's first Black president. Mandela was released after serving 27 years in jail.

Ahren Posthumus, chief executive officer of Moment, said that the proceeds of the sale will be donated to the Liliesleaf Museum Heritage Site, which received the original document as a gift in 2004, according to the Mandela item's seller. Approximately $50,000 was raised for the museum last year through the sale of a non-firing pen pistol held by fellow liberation warrior Oliver Tambo and donated by his family.

The "museum settings can keep afloat as a result," Posthumus explained in an interview. "They have suffered greatly by the absence of tourism as a result of Covid." As a result, this is a method of revitalizing their flow while also keeping history alive."

Mandela was freed from jail in 1990, and the country's first multiracial election took place four years after that.

According to Posthumus, the buyer of the NFT will have exclusive access to the original document at Liliesleaf Museum when the transaction is completed. As a result of the high-definition scan's paper, "the ink is visible through the paper," he explained.

Beginning in 1961, Liliesleaf farm, which was then on the outskirts of Johannesburg, was used as the secret headquarters of the African National Congress, where Mandela and other party officials were able to remain hidden from the police. In 1963, police conducted a raid on the location and detained many prominent campaigners.

Over the past several months, NFTs have seen a resurgence in popularity, with illustrations of monkeys and lions fetching tens of thousands of dollars at auction. The embryonic cryptocurrency trading market employs blockchain technology to confirm unique ownership tokens attached to otherwise easily reproduced digital assets.
